Drove 30mins one way to a specific store to rectify this mould issue. I got these for very, very cheap at a nursery centre that primarily sells plants that have already grown that one could purchase. They also sell seeds but this store mainly profits from plants that are already grown in pots. Where they sold the seed starter supplies, was on a small table, there weren't many choices to choose from. And really, I should have known, but I am not going to beat myself up seeing as this is my very first time growing plants from seeds. Anyway, note to self, these peat boxes are NOT GOOD for seed starting. The spaces between them are small and tight and good ventilation cannot be achieved. I should have just cut them out into individual boxes, that would have been much better than leaving them in a 4x3 or 3x3 configuration. By the time I figured that out, some of the mould had already gotten past the peat and into the starter soil itself.
Back to the store that I live 30 mins away from. I'd been there once before and they only sell seeds, gardening and birding supplies, no plants. They had a much broader selection of seed-starting equipment, one that I have my eye on for next season, complete with its own heating pad! I bought new supplies today to change my peat set up...
Tumblr media
I don't like that my answer is plastic, but since I already have seedlings growing, I am looking to relocate them for now but not to their forever homes yet. I needed a good foster environment for them to get stronger before I put them in planters or in the ground. I could have chosen this silicone seed starting tray that I saw, but they were a bit more expensive than cheap plastic and they were also very deep for some reason, meaning, I'd have to add more soil to fill up each box for the established seedlings to sit atop. The one good thing about those shitty peat boxes is that they allow the plants to transplant well, with little to no transplant shock. These plastic boxes do the trick well enough for now.
Tumblr media
This is what my final set up looks like. The three separate peat boxes on the bottom, contain chervil seedlings that have just germinated. This is what I should have done with the ones I used previously. Ah well, you live you learn. There are two trays holding all of these flimsy boxes together. Both plastic, one is a black gridded type of thing that you can see and underneath that is a clear plastic lid. I thought this set up might be nice as water tends to leak out of the seedling boxes, which isn't a bad thing entirely (it's like watering from the bottom and from what I've read, this method is the best for seed starting). The black grid thing acts like a sieve and allows the structure of this set up easier to hold when I move them from place to place within the house. The plastic lid liner under that, acts like a waterproof layer so water doesn't get everywhere indoors.
Tumblr media
I had transplanted my sweet peas (the flower kind, not the ones you can eat) into a wooden planter a while back! And no transplant shock! Indeed, they lived in those mouldy peat boxes before I set them free here. When I transplanted them, they were only about 3 inches tall, but look at them now!!! I'm so proud of these guys! I grew them from seeds!!!! That is what I've found very rewarding about this hobby--not only are seeds cheaper than buying already established plants, but I also get a real sense of accomplishment at seeing them grow from seed to beautiful fragrant plants that I can enjoy in the garden!

You know that children’s book “Guess how much I love you?” I feel like that is a staple in the Morales family house
It’s a book that you’ve had since you were a baby and when you were going through boxes trying to set up the nursery you found it again. You smiled as you flicked through the pages, showing it to Frankie who took a break from laying out the sections of the crib ready to be put together when baby girl arrives to place it on the shelf, but then you forget about it.
That’s until one night when Frankie is on the night feed, but when you can’t get back to sleep after hearing her cries that woke him, and so you pad barefoot down to the nursery to take a peek in on them.
Frankie is on the rocking chair, one hand holding her against his chest and the other holding the book you found those few months ago. You can only just make out what he is saying as he tries to keep his deep voice low while putting on the voices of the father and son hare, but when you do a small smile takes over your face.
“I love you right up to the moon.”
You listen in as he finishes the last few pages of the book before he places it on the small table beside the rocking chair as he shushes the baby back to sleep. This time you decide not to disturb them and tip toe quietly back to bed as he settles her in the crib again, crawling under the sheets just in time for Frankie coming back in. He climbs in behind you, his warm body moulding around yours as his chest presses against your back and his arm slings around your middle while pressing a kiss to your shoulder.
“Frankie?”
He leans up on his elbow to look down at you while you roll onto your back, an eyebrow raised questioning why you were awake.
“I love you right up to the moon.”
It takes him a second in his still half asleep state to understand what you’re saying, but when it hits him his eyebrows shoot up behind the curls that have fallen over his forehead, a wide and sleepy grin on his face as he dips his head down to kiss you gently.
“And I love you right back down to earth again,” he whispers against your lips, rolling you back onto your side and holding you against his chest.
He can’t wipe the smile from his face as you fall back asleep in his arms, something so small but so important in reminding him about this life he has created with you; so delicate and peaceful and full of love like nothing he has experienced before.
When baby girl starts learning how to talk and walk it becomes how you say you love each other throughout the day. When you go off to work she holds her arms wide and says “this is how much i love you” or when Frankie goes out to see the boys every other Friday she stands on her toes and says the same.
And every night since the first when you and Frankie fall into bed you tell each other “I love you right up to the moon” and “I love you right back down to earth again”

learn The system Of Cultivation An Olive Tree
elevating olive timber undoubtedly falls into the class currently achievement. Thereupon being stated, like several topics in way of life, they're properly worth the delay. underneath the proper instances, olives do not begin in contact culmination proper up till they're approximately 5 years old. This shows that           the tree to procure at a nursery will probable now not produce any fruit for approximately 24 months when you convey it home. fortuitously, heritage Olive trees are beautiful and genuinely worth developing only as a decorative tree, so that you will have something outstanding to appear right now you wait.
sun, Water, and ground
position your fruit tree preferably in the course of entire daylight but partial shade can also exchange the nation. Water it continually however cautiously for the duration of the season but don't overwater, Olives are fairly drought resistant plant life. there's typically no call for to water Specimen Olive timber at some stage in the winter handiest verify the idea ball would not dry out. guard from the immoderate liquid inside the time of the winter period by using masking the pot or plant. The land need to be well-tired, productive, and loam-based. also, repotting has were given to be undertaken each  to a few years.
cold weather Care
in case you reside in region 7 or decrease, take the tree inner for the iciness. allow it live for the duration of a cool room, a long way far from a heater or furnace, near a south or west-going through window. Olives are wind-pollinated, and usually self-wealthy. however, you'll get better fruit production in case you've extra than one tree. verify to both choose a couple of an equal elegance or if you're identifying one-of-a-kind types, a few of trees that blossom at an equivalent time. additionally, fruiting olives need 2 months of winter temperatures below 50F and above 22F, accordingly they shall circulate your tree interior at a tactical time simply so they can get the weather they want with out being destroyed by using temperatures that are too low. manifestly, just if you've got decided on a fruitless variety, you are going to be okay with most effective one tree (or as many as you want) and almost any winter conditions above freezing.
Pruning
Pruning the potted tree numerous instances in keeping with annum should likely be vital to live the tree inside its area restrictions. Pinching off the growing points will decorate bushiness even as beginning a branch from its foundation will throw open space inside the center of the tree. A root trim (getting the tree from its pot, shaking off unfastened soil, pruning its roots, then changing in the pot with new earth) can also assist prolong its feasible potted life.
Pest manipulate
The best pests we've recognised to strike olive trees outdoor of olive generating areas are a scale insect computer virus. It’s now not commonplace however needs to be found for, specifically in case your internet site has other sorts at risk of harbor scale insects. Scrutinize the timber via looking underneath the leaves and also inside the department axils for a dim bulge the dimensions of a "BB." these pests don't pass inside the adult degree; they join themselves like barnacles. The occurrence of sooty mould on leaves and bark, or ants crawling for your tree, suggests the prevalence of scale insects.
If a scale is observed, it'd be helped by way of numerous remedies, relying on private desire. It also may be deleted manually in case you've simply one or several trees. For those who produce other plantings that entice pests as an example journeys or stink, and bugs, these may additionally attempt your fruit tree. speak with the neighborhood lawn center or pest elimination physician almost about the manage of bugs. policies exchange from place to place.

Week One - 25 February 2019
Meet my current plants. Before anyone starts giving me a hard time about the state of the non-succulents, I am finally trying to put a few emotionally difficult months behind me and during those months, I would often forget to water. After a beautiful group of purple petra basil and aton basil failed to survive, I found the motivation to get back on the horse. The succulents fared quite well (as one could expect).
Aloe vera
She was rescued from someone who didn’t follow a good watering schedule and kept it out of direct sunlight. This is her about 6 months later... she recovered so well! Lots of smaller “babies” near the base. Leaves are full and firm, mild paleness/discoloration near the base of some stems.
Echinacea
Still recovering from my lack of consistent watering :( I don’t blame her, she lost most of her foliage and what’s left is half dried-out. LUCKILY there are lots of new leaves starting at the base! (Dunno if you can see in the picture, but they’re there) Hopefully the new leaves will come in strong.
Lemon balm
Fourth victim of my watering woes. The stem itself is still alive, but almost all foliage is gone, save a few mostly-dead tiny leaves at the bottom. I need help, please let me know if there’s anything I can do to save this little guy.
Little warty
Rescued from my sister a few months ago, looking great comparatively. However, the outer layers of leaves aren’t filling and regaining their green color the way they should. Does it make sense to take them off? Don’t want them to mould, and don’t want to unnecessarily stress this plant. This one also has 3 “babies” around the base.
Lavender
Already bouncing back nicely... note the MANY new leaves starting up on most stems! Existing leaves are perking up, still very aromatic, not as firm as I’d like them just yet. Trying to figure out what her new watering needs are... any tips?
Pachyphytum
TBH I have no clue what this is, though it is pretty common among “aesthetic” succulent growers. Lemme know if you have any ideas. She’s the newest addition to the family, from a nursery (if you couldn’t tell from the cute dome planter thingy). Thinking I should transplant into a real pot, but not sure if I should let it get accustomed to my home first or if I should just let it be indefinitely. Watered for the first time today since getting her.
Aeonium
Growing by leaps and bounds! Propped her up because she was leaning forward quite a bit. Lower layers of leaves are pouting a little bit because of this. Aside from the leaning issues, leaves are aromatic and maintain consistent firmness when I keep up with water.
Ghost echeveria
Wow, impressed with how far she’s come since I first rescued her 6 months ago... finally adding new leaves, and at a good clip too! Seems not to need as much water as the aeonium, not sure how much echeveria succulents need as a rule (if you haven’t yet noticed, I stopped looking at gardening websites for tips because they all contradict each other). Guess we will find out!
Purple & green shamrocks
Oi, these show the worst wear when it comes to inconsistent watering. The green one is still mad at me, but the purple is sending up flowers and new leaves, so that’s encouraging. One concern though: most new leaves are getting yellow/brown spots pretty early on, which usually take out the sprout in a few days. Since shamrocks are so persnickety, does it make sense to fertilize? Which fertilizers do y’all suggest?
Wandering Jew
A little upset with me about the “ladder” I installed, even though it was about 3 months ago... she really does prefer to hang. Don’t know if it makes sense to take away the ladder so that she perks up or if I should just give her more time to adjust. *sigh* time will tell.
Note: some of my pictures refused to upload, so some plants did not get progress reports this time ‘round. Fingers crossed for next week.
Thanks for checking in this week! Please don’t hesitate to comment or message me with tips/suggestions/ideas. Have a lovely day :)

Life Lessons. 1/3
Nursery class teacher Namjoon x social worker Y/N(reader) fluffish thing???
Warning; Revolving around child abuse but the act itself will not be depicted, just discussed.
“Aren't you a little young to be a social worker?" He eyed you suspiciously as if you were going to tell him you knew the secret to the location of the fountain of youth.
"Aren't you a little young to be a teacher?" You retorted and a grin stretched his cheeks.
"Touche."
Tumblr media
Blue and purple blossoms stained young, innocent skin day in day out hidden usually by layers of clothing. But on this day the little boy had spilt the juice that accompanied his mid-morning snack on his trousers. Of course, he couldn't be left in the wet, sticky item and he cried oh he cried with wailing screams when class assistant Maelyn fought to change him into clean trousers the nursery kept for such incidents. Maelyn, upon spotting the unforgiving bruises, instantly called for teacher Namjoon, in charge of the class of four-year-olds. Ever since Namjoon couldn't get the image of such tender innocent skin bruised so severely.
It was only an hour later that you arrived. Maelyn was the one to greet you as Namjoon was deep into an activity with the abused boy, trying to keep the little one calm and happy for as long as possible.
"All over his legs, you said?" You asked, eyeing the child for any signs of neglect.
"Yes, he made a fuss about me removing his clothing. I wonder if there's more." She replied with a deep frown. She had after all been working with the child for over a year already but before today hadn't suspected foul play active in his young life.
You only hummed agreeing. Although you knew from experience that even though it was incredibly likely he had more markings on his pale skin, he was no doubt scared of someone finding the bruises. No doubt his abuser had threatened him to keep the secret and the poor child was terrified of what fate letting the secret out would bring upon him.
For a moment, you allowed yourself to forget what you knew and just observe his behaviour. Watching him play with the man beside him, he seemed like any other child. There wasn't any fear or hesitance as he rolled out the playdough to make shapes and show them proudly to the man. His eyes shone brightly with joy and excitement only a child could have and it confused you. Usually, in such cases as these, the child's light would've dimmed, not necessarily extinguished already as children have the remarkable ability to bounce back and forgive, but the burning fire of childish innocence and wonder always dulled. But this little boy, he shone bright like every other child in the room, if not a little brighter due to the one on one attention he was gaining from the staff member.
As if sensing your presence, Namjoon slowly lifted his gaze to meet yours. He gave a small, polite smile of greeting before turning back to the child not wanting to lose the creative streak he had going. Already the boy had made a tortoise, elephant, robot and of course the classic snake from the dough. Every time, Namjoon praised him for his skill and imagination, even if he himself had to stretch his own creative thoughts to understand the form the mass of misshaped dough in the small hands took on.
"Is there anything I can get you?" Maelyn asked after allowing you to observe and make notes in your notebook for ten minutes silently.
"You have files on the children? Progress and such?" You asked, eyeing her questioningly. She nodded immediately. "I'd like his one please."
"Yes yes of course." She didn't hesitate to agree to your request and rushed off to the office to comply with your wishes.
While left alone, you took it upon yourself to sit down at the little table pushed to the back of the room out of the way. It had a pencil pot full of coloured crayons in the centre with a neat stack of colouring pages. Clearly, it was a quiet-time table but none of the children felt the need to use it. They were all too busy running around with toys and swiping splodges of various colours paints onto paper and calling it a masterpiece.
Your seat gave you view of the little boy without being too close to cause him any discomfort if he noticed your presence.
Only a further five minutes later his file was on the table in front of you and Maelyn had left upon request of a little girl to play hairdressers with her group of friends.
The quiet time gave you time to read through the file carefully to pick up any hints of neglect. It started with his name and date of birth.
Choi Jaehyuk 15/06/2013
Instantly the date confused you. His birthday was only two weeks away and then he would be five. That meant he was in the age bracket above this nursery class. He should've already been in the reception class.
"Why is he here?" You murmured, scanning the page quickly for an answer to your question. You found it as a handwritten note at the bottom. "Started nursery late. Kept in the lower age class." You read aloud quietly. It made sense but it didn't fully sate you. Many children started nursery late but they were rarely kept back with the lower aged class due to it. There was always a special circumstance that left them there but so far, you hadn't seen anything in Jaehyuk's file to specify that particular reason.
Maybe you had missed the explanation, you reasoned. So you read back through much slower and more precisely the second time.
Even after reading the entire thin file three times through, you found no answer.
"Strange." Still sat on the small chair designed for children, you turned to locate the boy again. He was still happily playing with the playdough and that surprised you. Most children grow bored quickly but he was relentlessly moulding the dough into different forms each one more daring and complex than the last, not that you could tell what his imagination was seeing in the clump before him.
Quickly, you located Maelyn and returned the file to her. "I would appreciate if you could forward me a copy of this file to my office." You informed.
"Of course, I'll do it right now." She excused herself from the group she played with to do as you requested. The children looked at you curiously so you offered a friendly smile. They all smiled back, satisfied your presence wasn't sinister before turning their attention back to their game.
Carefully, you made your way over to Jaehyuk and the staff that still sat with him.
Namjoon looked up at you and offered you a dimpled smile. REalising someone else had his precious teacher's attention, Jaehyuk too looked up at you. You smiled down at him and he smiled back cautiously.
That was the first sign he had given that displayed anything that could cause suspicion. Of course, many children were unsure of new people, especially adults, so you didn't note it as a telltale sign of anything being amiss.
"Hi, I'm Y/N." You greeted, lowering your body to be at eye level with Jaehyuk in an attempt to make him feel more at ease with you. "I see you're a very creative one, aren't you?" You smiled, tilting your head. He looked away nervously. "Can I play with you? We can make much bigger things with three pairs of hands." You suggested. The proposition intrigued Jaehyuk so he looked at you curiously. "What's your favourite animal?"
"Lion." He answered quietly.
"Ah, that's a great animal!" You enthused grinning at him. His lips turned up into a small smile. "I think we can make a brilliant lion between us." He looked eager to try so you continued. "Shall we try it?" He nodded and you smiled in both relief and victory. You were afraid he wouldn't open his heart to you as many abused children had problems doing so but he was welcoming you easily.
Jaehyuk reached to the chair tucked into the table on his left and pulled it out. "You can sit here." He offered quickly standing to lean over the table and open more of the little pots of coloured dough.
"Thank you." You sat down and looked at the staff who was already looking at you, a soft smile on his features. Realising your eyes were on him, pink dusted his cheeks and he scratched his neck awkwardly.
"I'm Namjoon, I'm the teacher in charge of the second year class." He announced, extending his arm out to you.
"Nice to meet you." You spoke, shaking his hand, not missing how his long fingers enveloped your smaller hand easily. From the corner of your eye, you saw Jaehyuk looking between yourself and Namjoon, wondering who you really were. "I'm a friend here to play." You announced, not wanting to scare the little boy with your job title, even if you suspected he wouldn't know what it meant.
Satisfied with your answer, Jaehyuk turned back around to continue emptying pots onto the table.
"Well, we love having new friends," Namjoon replied and your hands returned to their owners. "Don't we, Jaehyuk?" The little boy only nodded, too absorbed in his task to verbalise his agreement.
***
By the time the lunch break arrived, Jaehyuk was comfortable enough to talk animatedly with you and show you around, pointing out the names of his friends and inviting you to join them. It gave Namjoon a break to interact with other children without concern Jaehyuk's fear would return.
When the children sat down to eat, you took the chance to talk to his teacher.
Namjoon smiled when you approached him where he stood aside watching over the children to make sure they all had their lunches and were sat eating nicely.
"Thank you for calling us straight away." Were the first words you spoke, careful to keep your voice quiet so the conversation would stay between you. "We've had a lot of cases where school staff have waited to call us in."
"Oh no, I couldn't leave him like this." His eyebrows furrowed and a frown tugged his lips down as he thought about how Jaehyuk must be suffering daily. "I just wish we noticed sooner. I hope it hasn't been going on too long."
"Me too. He's such a lovely kid."
"He really is." Namjoon beamed proudly, it was as if you were talking about his own son. Clearly, the teacher cared deeply about his students and it made you smile fondly. "It's my lunch break now so if you'd like to talk, I'm going to the store. You're welcome to join."
"That would be great." You agreed, eager to have the time to talk freely with him without any of the children overhearing.
"Alright children!" Namjoon called drawing their attention. "I'll be back soon and it's Friday so you know what that means is in store for this afternoon." He grinned when the children started to yell excitedly.
"Special snack!" Various young voices shouted and Namjoon chuckled.
"Yep, special snack day! So eat all of your lunch and be good for Miss Maelyn and Miss Lea while I'm gone."
"Is Miss Y/N going to play with us more after lunch?" A little girl named Aileen asked hopefully.
"Ah, I hope so." Namjoon looked at you, his eyes reflecting his words.
"Of course." You agreed instantly and multiple children cheered happily. Your attention was back to the students so you didn't notice the joyful smile spread Namjon's cheeks widen and deepen his dimples.
"We'll be back soon." Namjoon finalised and the children waved goodbye so you both left the room.
Namjoon quickly grabbed his jacket then the two of you were off.
"Is the store close?" You questioned not at all familiar with the area. "I have my car." You explained realising he didn't have any keys in his hand.
"Hm, yeah, less than a ten-minute walk."
"Ah okay." You nodded. "That's convenient."
"Yeah." He chuckled. "Have you made any thoughts on Jaehyuk?"
"He's a very welcoming child, I honestly wouldn't suspect foul play if you hadn't told me as much. I'm not at all surprised no-one picked up on it earlier."
"I'm glad even a social worker didn't notice. Wait! That sounded horrible! I just meant I'm glad that we didn't miss obvious signs. I really don't mean to sound like I want harm to come to him or any child for that matter." He rambled.
"It's okay, I know what you meant." You laughed lightly. He relaxed.
"But speaking of, aren't you a little young to be a social worker?" He eyed you suspiciously as if you were going to tell him you knew the secret to the location of the fountain of youth.
"Aren't you a little young to be a teacher?" You retorted and a grin stretched his cheeks.
"Touche." You both laughed lightly. "This is only my first year. I was an assistant at another school last year." He explained simply and you hummed in understanding.
"Oh, that reminds me actually about something I saw in Jaehyuk's file."
"Yeah?"
"He'll be five soon. He should already be in reception."
"Ah yeah, he started late and was painfully shy and behind on everything. I think for a moment they suspected neglect at home, he could barely speak and didn't make eye contact, from what I heard."
"But...we had no record of Choi Jaehyuk, I checked before leaving the office. There's not even anything bad about his dad. No police record, no sign of social being involved before today." Namjoon frowned.
"I know, they didn't get anyone involved because they met the father and had no worries. Jaehyuk's dad is a nice guy like, normal, but maybe it's an act, I don't know. I'm kind of hoping he's an incredibly clumsy kid that bruises easily but...those aren't ordinary bruises."
"The important thing is that you didn't hesitate to call. We can't change what is in the past but we can do everything in our power to make sure his future is better." You ensured, putting a reassuring hand on Namjoon's arm for only a moment in fear of walking into the people passing you both on the path.
"Yeah, I suppose." Slowly, he nodded in agreement but his deep frown didn't leave.
Honestly, you hated seeing such a kind man with such a sad look. Usually, you never much cared about the people surrounding the child you were sent to check up on. Of course, you checked to make sure they showed no signs of abuse themselves both giving and receiving but other than that, your priority was the child. But something about Namjoon stirred up your insides and sent your heart plummeting when he looked so incredibly affected and in pain.
Usually, you'd continue to discuss the child and ignore any internal crisis the adult you were talking to faced except for maybe handing out a tissue or sympathetic pat of the hand to their shoulder, but Namjoon had you blowing all your usual methods and procedures out of the water and plunging in heart first.
"So, special snack day?" You asked, hoping to steer the topic to something that would bring back that beautiful dimpled smile you had already grown so fond of.
Physically you could see Namjoon's mood pick back up. His back straightened and his head lifted. His eyes danced with excitement instead of swirling with pain as his mind rushed with worst-case scenarios and guilt in regards to the little boy with the sweetest smile. When Namjoon looked at you with his lips curved upwards, your heart shot back into place and thudded against your ribs.
"Every Friday I give them something special, for being so good all week."
"They're always so good?"
"We have a few slip-ups as expected with children but for the most part, they're the most loving well-behaved bunch of children and I'm honestly going to be sad to see them go in a few months. I'm tempted to try and sneak into the school as their reception teacher." He admitted with a blush and shy laugh.
"That's really sweet." You commented. His blush darkened and he suddenly couldn't meet your gaze. "I get the feeling you feel like they're you're children, it certainly comes across that way at least."
"Yeah, I do...Is that weird?" His expression twisted into one of concern. "Should I try harder not to see them that way? Maelyn says I'm too attached to them."
"I think it's wonderful. You care so deeply about them and they can feel it. Children can sense such things and they feed off it. They love you just as much in return. You get what you give with children their age." You informed even if you figured he probably knew as much. "Every child in that class looks at you with nothing but adoration. They idolise you, Namjoon."
"Ah, you really think so?" At your hum of confirmation, the brightest most joy-filled smile you had ever seen anyone wear spread his features.
Your heart thumped again and you knew in that moment that you were well and truly screwed.
I hope you guys like this, I’ll post a part every day so you won’t have to wait long for an update

Edible buttercup flowers are a beautiful addition to any garden. They are easy to grow and can be harvested for use in many different ways. This article will show you how to make edible buttercup flowers. The first step is to find a suitable variety of edible flowers that grow well in your area. The best types for producing edible flowers include:
• Alyssum
• Calendula
• Cosmos
• Dandelion
• Geraniums
• Marigolds
• Nasturtiums
• Petunias
• Snapdragons
• Sunflowers
• Violets
• Zinnia
Once you have chosen which type of edibles flower you want to grow, it's time to prepare the soil. Dig up some dirt from around your house or get some from a local nursery. You want to dig about 1/2 inch deep so that when you plant the seeds, they don't dry out too quickly. If you live in an area with sandy soil, add sand to the mix. Next, add organic matter such as composted manure, peat moss, or leaf mould. These ingredients help to improve soil quality. Be sure to water the soil thoroughly after adding the organic material. Now, you need to choose where you want to put your edible flowers. It's important to remember that most edible plants like sun exposure. So if you plan on planting them outside, try to place them in full sunlight. Also, be careful not to over-fertilize them; this could cause the plants to become leggy.
Now comes the fun part! Planting the seeds is very simple. Take one source at a time and gently press it into the ground. Water the soil thoroughly and wait until the seeds sprout. Once the seeds start to grow, remove the stem and transplant the seedlings into larger pots. When the plants reach 2-3 inches tall, pinch off the bottom leaves to encourage bushy growth. When the plants are ready for harvest, cut the stems back by half. Remove the petals and eat them fresh. Or, you can freeze them for later use. To do this, blanch the petals in boiling water for 30 seconds and then cool them under cold running water. Dry them thoroughly before storing them in airtight containers. You can also make edible buttercup flowers into jam. Boil the petals in a large pot of water for 10 minutes. Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth and let it cool. Add sugar and lemon juice to taste. Pour the mixture into jars and seal tightly. Store these jams in the refrigerator. Growing Edible Flowers
Growing edible flowers has never been easier than now. There are several edible flowers available today that are perfect for home gardens. Some of the more popular ones include:
• Basil
• Borage
• Cilantro
• Dill
• Garlic chives
• Lemon balm
• Mint
• Parsley
• Rosemary
• Sage
• Thyme
• Yarrow
Edible flowers are easy to grow and require little maintenance. They're ideal for beginners because they don't need much care. All you need to know how to do is provide proper light and fertilizer.
Light
Most edible flowers prefer bright light. This means that they will do better in areas that receive lots of direct sunlight. However, if you live in an area that receives less light, you may still grow edible flowers. Just keep in mind that they won't bloom as well.
Fertilizer
There are many different types of fertilizer available for growing edible flowers. The best thing to do would be to find a fertilizer specifically designed for growing edible flowers. Most commercial fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and sodium. You'll notice that some of these nutrients are common in other plants too. For example, phosphorus is found in corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, barley, rice, potatoes, peas, beans, carrots, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, garlic, turnips, and radishes. What Is A Seed Tray?
Starting your own plants from seed will often give you healthier plants at a lower cost.  If you want to start seeds in bulk, you may want to consider a seed tray to help with germination.
So, what is a seed tray?  A seed tray is a container used to sow multiple seeds at once.  After seed germination, seedlings grow in the seedling tray until they are large enough for transplant.  A single seed tray can hold anywhere from 6 seeds to over 1000 seeds!
Of course, when choosing a seed tray, there are lots of options for the material, the type of tray, and the number of cells.
In this article, we’ll talk about seed trays and the options that are available.  We’ll also get into how to use seed trays and how to water the seeds and seedlings.
Let’s get going.
What Is A Seed Tray?
A seed tray is a container that is used to plant multiple seeds at once.  A seed tray is sometimes called a seed starting tray.
A seed tray allows you to plant many seeds together in one container.  This makes it much easier to water them and transport them.
After the seeds germinate, the seed tray holds seedlings as they grow, until they are ready for transplant outdoors or into larger containers.
There are a few different types of seed trays, including:
Mesh seed tray – a mesh seed tray allows water to drain out easily.  A mesh seed tray is best for holding multiple individual containers (pots).  A drawback is that the holes in a mesh seed tray are too large to hold soil without it falling through or washing away when watered. You can find mesh seed trays from Johnny’s Selected Seeds.
Solid seed tray with drainage holes – a solid seed tray with drainage holes allows for adequate drainage, but allows soil to stay moist enough for seed germination.  A solid seed tray with drainage holes is best for planting multiple seeds together in one place.  A drawback is that the seedlings do not have individual cells, so their roots can get tangled together as they grow. You can find solid seed trays with drainage holes from Johnny’s Selected Seeds.
Solid seed tray without drainage holes (leak proof seed tray) – a solid seed tray without drainage holes does not allow for any drainage.  A solid seed tray without drainage holes is best for holding a cell flat (also called a plug flat).  Since it holds water, it can be used to catch excess water from watering seeds, or it can be used to water from below (more detail on this later). You can find cell seed trays without drainage holes from Johnny’s Selected Seeds.
Another interesting option is this seed flat with 20 rows from Johnny’s Selected Seeds. Instead of separate cells, there are separate rows to keep different plant varieties from getting mixed up.
If you decide to use a cell flat for seed germination, each cell should have its own drainage hole.  The tray below the cell flat should be solid without holes if you want to water the seeds from below.
The main problem of adapting the SRI techniques is high labor requirements for manual and lacking of mechanized system for planting single seedling in the field. The existing seedling preparation methods remain challenging among SRI practitioners due to traumatic condition. This study was intended to create modern techniques for increasing the quality and transplanting potentials to improve seedling preparation and reduce transplanting shock. It involved development of rectangular tray having 924 square growing cavities with sliding base to facilitate seedling transfer. Seed selection was conducted and 100% germination was obtained from the sunken MR219 seeds collected in 80 g/L of NaCl solution. SRI-tray seeding was 100% placed into cavities with SRI-seed picker at 150 g/L of tapioca solution. Two different media (Soil + Burnt husk (1:1) as M1 and Soil + Compost (1:1) as M2) were used to evaluate the growth performances for 10 days. The measured parameters (Seedling Height (SH), Leaf Length (LL), Leaf Number (LN), Root Length (RL) and Loosening Index (LI)) were compared between SRI-tray and conventional ones. The SAS revealed that M2 on SRI-tray had the highest significant values for SH, LL, RL and LI with the mean values of 155.6, 109.3, 89.3 and 75 sec when compared with conventional tray which had 125, 91 and 52 mm with no LI, respectively. The seed rate, nursery area and seedling age to support one hectare of planting area were found as 5.34 kg, 36 m2 and 8-10 days on SRI-tray against 15-50 kg, 250-500 m2 and 12-30 days on conventional practices.
The more pellets that are placed in the mould, the denser and stronger the seedling tray with lids.
In cheaper trays, there tend to be slightly bigger gaps between the expanded pellets, and fine plant roots can enter these, making it difficult to pull out the plants.
Damping off organisms can also lurk in these small spaces, and the growing plants can become infected and die. One of the Pythium species (fungus-type pathogens) is usually the main culprit, but it’s not the only one.
I have used horse manure compost as a medium for 23 years and have never had damping off problems. This may be because the medium is a rich source of beneficial organisms, which suppress development of pathogens. I also never get powdery mildew on Brassica seedlings.
Once the pathogen has appeared, the trays must be sterilised, or the problem will keep cropping up and possibly cause major losses.
The most effective way of sterilising trays is in a heat chamber. To save cost and effort, some growers wait until damping off starts before using heat sterilising.
Another solution is to use a commercial dip containing copper; this will also reduce the penetration of roots into the fine gaps in the polystyrene.
If you are a small grower, you can use a simple, home-made steriliser such as bleach mixed with water at a 10% solution, or hydrogen peroxide at 3% concentration. Leave the trays suspended in the solution for 20 minutes, then rinse and dry them.
The ideal sealant
One of the most effective ways of treating seedling trays is to dip them in a water-based roof paint when they are still new.
Obtain a flat receptacle slightly larger than the tray and dilute the paint with 10% water. Push the tray face down into the paint until the paint reaches the drainage holes. Lift and allow the excess paint to drip back into the tray, then place it face-up to dry. (It’s unnecessary to paint the base.) You should be able to coat about 10 trays per litre.
Some farmers are put off by the price of paint, but this treatment is well worth the cost: not only does it extend the life of the rice seedling tray by many years, but it seals the fine gaps in the polystyrene.
This reduces the risk of pathogens lurking in these crevices and also makes it much easier to pull out the seedlings.
Roof paints come in many colours, so you can use different colours for different years to keep track of the lifespan of each batch of styrofoam seed trays. There are often specials on roof paints and you can take advantage of these to cut the costs of the treatment.
Biodegradable plastics have been widely introduced into agricultural production, but their impacts on the soil ecosystem remain unclear. The present study investigated the impacts of a biodegradable seedling tray (BST) on the microbial communities in paddy soils. A 110-day rice culture experiment was conducted with three different paddy soils developed from black soil (BS, black chernozem soil), chao soil (CS, Fluvo-aquic) and red soil (RS, Alfisols) and three application rates of BST (0, 0.02 and 0.2 g kg−1). Soil phthalic acid ester (PAE) concentrations, physicochemical properties and enzyme activities were determined to evaluate the influence of BSTs on soil quality. 16S high-throughput sequencing was used to study bacterial community composition and the Biolog EcoPlate™ test was used to profile microbial activity and community function. Results show that the application of BSTs did not markedly affect soil quality, and the potential release of PAEs from BSTs was negligible. Interestingly, the microbial community was affected by BSTs in a soil-dependent and time-dependent pattern. The microbial community in RS was not significantly influenced by BSTs. Relative abundances of some predominant genera in BS (e.g. norank_f__BSV40) and CS (e.g. Norank_f__Nitrosomonadaceae) were significantly influenced by BSTs, and db-RDA results show that community composition in BS and CS was shaped mainly by BSTs. Community level profiling shows that BSTs significantly increased microbial activity and decreased functional diversity in BS after 55 days, but the impacts disappeared after 110 days. The results contribute to the knowledge of how biodegradable plastics influence microbial communities in paddy fields and provide information relevant to the practical use of BSTs under field condition.
This experiment investigated the effect of different plug-tray cell designs on root development of red maple (Acer rubrum), red oak (Quercus rubra), and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) seedlings. In April of 2015, seeds of each species were sown into three plug trays with different substrate volumes and grown for 17 weeks. Two trays had permeable walls for air-pruning, one with vertical ribs and one without. The third tray had impermeable plastic cell walls. Harvested seedlings were analyzed for root dry weight, length, volume, surface area and number of deflected roots. Root length per volume was highest in the impermeable-walled tray for red maple and quaking aspen. The total numbers of deflected root systems were higher for all species in the impermeable-walled tray. Seedlings grown in the air-pruning trays had smaller proportions of deflected root masses. Greater substrate volume did not influence root deflection development. The air-pruning tray without vertical ribs had the lowest total number of root masses with misdirected roots and lower proportions of root masses with misdirected roots for all species. These results indicate that improved root architecture in root-air pruning tray designs is achievable in tree propagation; however, vertical plastic structures in air-pruning trays can still cause root deflections.

How to grow potatoes
From earthy new potatoes and bite-sized salad varieties, to floury bakers and roasters, the humble potato remains the nation’s favourite vegetable. If you’re a potato aficionado, there’s a huge number of exciting potato varieties you can grow that you’ll never see in the shops. You don’t even need a garden to grow them – many grow very happily in large bags or pots on a balcony or patio.
There are three main types of potato to grow, named according to when you plant and harvest them.
You're reading: How to grow potatoes
First early or ‘new’ potatoes are the earliest to crop, in June and July. They don’t store for long so are best eaten fresh.
Second earlies (also called ‘new’ potatoes) take a few more weeks to mature and are harvested in July and August. These also don’t store for long, so are best eaten fresh. Salad potatoes have a firm, waxy texture and many have an intense, nutty flavour. They are usually first earlies or second earlies.
Maincrop potatoes take the longest to mature and are harvested from August to October. They are suitable for baking , roasting and mashing, and can be stored for a few months.
How to grow potatoes at home
Potatoes are easy to grow – one seed potato will produce many potatoes to harvest. Prepare the soil by digging and removing weeds, and then dig straight trenches 12cm deep and 60cm apart. In spring, plant seed potatoes 30cm apart and cover them with soil to fill the trench. When the shoots reach 20cm tall, use a rake, hoe or spade to mound soil up around the bases of the shoots, covering the stems half way. This is called earthing up. You can also grow first early and second early potatoes in a large bag on a patio or balcony, covering them with compost as they grow.

How to grow potatoes – chitting seed potatoes
Grow your own potatoes from ‘seed potatoes’, which are small potato tubers rather than actual seeds. You can buy seed potatoes from late winter. Don’t be tempted to grow potatoes from old potatoes from the veg rack, as they won’t produce reliable crops.
Before planting, you need to ‘chit’ your potatoes. This involves letting the potatoes grow shoots, which will give you a bigger potato crop. Place seed potatoes in trays or egg cartons with the end that has the most eyes uppermost. Stand in a cool, light spot until 1-2cm long shoots have formed. This could take up to six weeks.

Home-grown potatoes do well in all types of soil, but the richer the better, so dig in plenty of well-rotted organic matter, such as garden compost. An open, sunny site is best.
While maincrop potatoes grow well in the ground, early or salad potatoes will also do well in large pots and bags. Polypropylene potato growing bags are designed especially for this purpose and are handy if you’re short of space. However, you can also plant potatoes in an old compost bag, with similar results.
Here, Monty explains how to grow potatoes in a bag:
When growing potatoes in the ground, plant earlies and salad types in March, 12cm deep and 30cm apart, with 60cm between rows. Plant maincrop potatoes later, in April. These need to stay in the ground longer and require more space to produce a decent crop. Plant them 12cm deep and 38cm apart, with 75cm between rows. Plant potatoes with the shoots (or ‘eyes’) facing upwards.

How to grow potatoes – earthing up potatoes
Water potatoes regularly, especially during warm, dry spells, and keep the soil weed free. As the potato plants grow, use a spade or hoe to cover the shoots with soil to stop the developing tubers becoming green and inedible. This is called ‘earthing up’. Leave the top few centimetres poking out the top. As plants continue to grow you will need to earth them up again.

Growing potatoes: problem solving
How to grow potatoes – potato blight
Slugs can be a problem, especially if growing potatoes under black plastic.
Potato blight is a fungal disease, which turns foliage yellow with dark patches and causes the tubers to rot. Grow a blight-resistant potato variety to avoid the problem. You can also cut the potato plants down at the first sign of infection, as the fungus will not have reached the tubers by that stage. Then harvest the tubers as soon as you can.
Never grow potatoes in the same soil year after year as this could lead to a build up of pests and diseases. These include potato eelworm, which causes stunted growth and poor cropping.
When to harvest potatoes
How to grow potatoes – harvesting potatoes
First early potatoes are harvested in June and July, when the plants are still flowering and the potatoes are about the size of a large hen’s egg (gently rummage around in the soil to check). Cut the potato plants (also known as haulms) to the ground, then gently prise the plants out of the ground with a fork. These potatoes don’t store well, so dig up the potatoes as and when you want to eat them.
Second earlies are harvested in July and August, again when the plants are still flowering. Harvest in the same way as first earlies. Again, these potatoes don’t store well, so dig up them as and when you want to eat them.
Maincrop potatoes are harvested from August to October, when the leaves on the plants have turned yellow and died down. Choose a dry day to dig up your crop so that they store better. Cut the plants to the ground and dig up your potatoes, discarding any that are bruised or have been attacked by pests.

Preparing and cooking potatoes
How to grow potatoes – baked potato
Wash and scrub potatoes before frying, boiling, baking, mashing, roasting or sautéeing – this has to be the most versatile vegetable!
Health note: never eat potatoes raw. Green potatoes contain a chemical called solanine, which they develop when exposed to light. It can cause severe stomach upsets.
Storing potatoes
How to grow potatoes – how to store potatoes
Home-grown potatoes, particularly maincrop potatoes, will store well for many months in a cool but frost-free place. Only store perfect tubers, removing any showing signs of damage, and don’t wash them before storage. All light must be excluded to avoid potatoes turning green and poisonous. Hessian or thick brown-paper sacks are available for the job. Check crops in store regularly, removing any rotten ones.
Watch Kevin Smith explain how to prevent stored potatoes from rotting, in our Quick Tips video:
Advice for buying potatoes
Potatoes are available from a range of garden centres and nurseries, with many offering online sales. If you’re a member of an allotment association, you may be able to buy potatoes direct from the ‘allotment shop’ at a reduced price
Choose between first earlies, second earlies and maincrop potatoes, depending on when you want to to eat your potatoes and if you have a problem with blight (first and second earlies are usually harvested before blight hits)
Check the seed potatoes thoroughly when they arrive/before you buy. Make sure they’re firm and avoid any with very long roots or any with signs of mould

Molded Fiber Pulp Packaging Market 2017 –2027
Molded fiber is a paper-based packaging material that uses 100% recyclable materials such as newspaper, cardboard, water, and other natural fibers. It is also known as molded pulp as it is used to formed shape, it is created with round corners and complex three-dimensional shapes. For example, egg cartons is used as protective packaging. Molded fiber pulp packaging is also used for packaging of electronics, automotive parts, household goods, and medical products. Molded paper pulp easily gets decomposed in the soil.
The global Molded Fiber Pulp Packaging market was valued at US$ 7180.0 Mn in terms of value and 2683009.2 Thousand Tons in terms of volume in 2018
Increasing launch of wood-fiber based packaging solution is projected to propel the market growth of molded fiber pulp packaging. For instance, in May 2019, Stora Enso introduced DuraSense by Stora Enso, a wood-fiber-based bio-composite for premium cosmetics, food and luxury brands that aim for effective and biodegradable packaging alternatives. DuraSense is a combination of wood fibers and polymers which could be bio-based, fossil, or recycled.
Growing demand for molded fiber pulp packaging as a protective packaging such as nursery pots, floral containers, food trays, and beverage containers are projected to foster market growth. Moreover, rising demand from the transportation industry for environmentally friendly solution with excellent vibration dampening and cushioning properties is projected to propel the market growth over the forecast period.
Western Europe region dominated the global molded fiber pulp packaging market in 2018, accounting for 25.9% share in terms of value, followed by North America and Asia Pacific (excl.Japan), respectively
Tumblr media
Figure 1. Global Molded Fiber Pulp Packaging Value Market Share (%), By Region, 2018
The availability of substitutes such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) and other plastic is projected to hinder the market growth. Moreover, usage of molded fiber also raise the raw material and power requirements as compared to EPS which is also projected to hamper the market growth over the forecast period. Furthermore, EPS has improved as a shock-absorbing material than mold fiber pulp packaging and is also lightweight and versatile. This offers savings in overall production costs. Therefore, rising usage of EPS as a substitute for molded fiber pulp is projected to curb market growth.
Molded fiber packaging is not suitable for packaging of product such as furniture, televisions, cold chain shippers, etc. hence this is protected to limit market growth over the forecast period. Moreover, the choice of raw materials directly depends on the characteristic of the final product and differ in the properties. Hence, such factors are projected to hinder the market growth over the forecast period.
Rising investment by major player for the development of biodegradable fiber product is projected to offer new immense growth opportunity to the market. For instance, in March 2019, Stora Enso has invested around US$ 5.5 Million to build a new production line and related infrastructure to manufacture formed fiber products at Hylte Mill in Sweden. The formed fiber technology enables manufacturing of products that are designed for circularity, meaning that they are renewable, recyclable and biodegradable and do not contain any plastic.
Growing demand for fiber drums from the retail sector for packaging purposes is expected to show lucrative growth opportunities to the market. Fiber drum is low cost and eco-friendly and are more resistant to corrosion in comparison to plastic and met counterparts. Moreover, they are manufactured from the recyclable materials and require less amount of energy during production that reduces their footprint on the environment. Therefore, this is expected to propel the market growth over the forecast period.
Tumblr media
Figure 2. Global Molded Fiber Pulp Packaging – Market Opportunity Analysis
Global molded fiber pulp packaging market was valued at US$ 7180.0 Mn in 2018 and is forecast to reach a value of US$ 11934.6 Mn by 2027 at a CAGR of 5.8% between 2019 and 2027
Rising demand for pulp paper packaging in the emerging market due to urbanization, increasing consumer awareness, and increasing population is projected to fuel the market growth over the forecast period.
